General exam question G2A06
Subelement G2, OPERATING PROCEDURES· Group G2A
Which of the following is an advantage of using single sideband, as compared to other analog voice modes on the HF amateur bands?
- A.Very high-fidelity voice modulation
- B.Less subject to interference from atmospheric static crashes
- C.Ease of tuning on receive and immunity to impulse noise
- D.Less bandwidth used and greater power efficiency (correct answer)
WhySingle sideband's main advantage over other analog voice modes is that it uses less bandwidth and delivers greater power efficiency. SSB drops the carrier and one full sideband that AM and double sideband both transmit, so all the transmitter's power goes into the one sideband actually carrying information, and the signal takes up roughly half the bandwidth a double sideband signal would, answer D. SSB doesn't actually improve fidelity, static immunity, or tuning ease compared to other analog modes, if anything it's harder to tune precisely because there's no carrier to zero-beat against.
