Technician exam question T8A07
Subelement T8, SIGNALS AND EMISSIONS· Group T8A
What is one characteristic of single sideband (SSB) compared to FM?
- A.SSB signals are easier to tune in correctly
- B.SSB signals are less susceptible to interference
- C.SSB signals have narrower bandwidth (correct answer)
- D.SSB signals are less susceptible to high SWR
WhyCompared to FM, single sideband (SSB) signals have narrower bandwidth. SSB strips out the redundant sideband and carrier that a double-sideband signal would carry, so an SSB voice signal occupies roughly half the bandwidth of an equivalent FM voice signal, answer C. SSB is actually somewhat harder to tune in cleanly than FM (A), it isn't inherently less susceptible to interference (B), and neither mode is notably more forgiving of high SWR than the other (D).
