How does a linear electronic voltage regulator work?
- A.It has a ramp voltage as its output
- B.It eliminates the need for a pass transistor
- C.The control element duty cycle is proportional to the line or load conditions
- D.The conduction of a control element is varied to maintain a constant output voltage (correct answer)
WhyA linear electronic voltage regulator works by varying the conduction of a control element to maintain a constant output voltage. A linear electronic voltage regulator works by continuously varying the conduction of a control (pass) element in proportion to whatever's needed to hold the output voltage constant against changes in line voltage or load current, answer D. It doesn't produce a ramp output voltage, it does still require a pass transistor, and "duty cycle proportional to line or load conditions" describes a switching regulator's behavior, not a linear one.
