What is the purpose of using a prescaler with a frequency counter?
- A.Amplify low-level signals for more accurate counting
- B.Multiply a higher frequency signal so a low-frequency counter can display the operating frequency
- C.Prevent oscillation in a low-frequency counter circuit
- D.Reduce the signal frequency to within the counter's operating range (correct answer)
WhyA prescaler is used with a frequency counter to reduce a signal's frequency down to within the counter's operating range. A prescaler divides down a signal whose frequency is too high for a frequency counter's own circuitry to count directly, bringing it within the counter's usable range before the count is displayed (with the counter's readout scaled back up to show the true frequency), answer D. It doesn't amplify weak signals, doesn't multiply a signal upward, and isn't there to prevent oscillation in the counter itself.
