Technician exam question T1B09
Subelement T1, COMMISSION’S RULES· Group T1B · 47 CFR §97.101(a), 97.301(a-e)
Why should you not set your transmit frequency to be exactly at the edge of an amateur band or sub-band?
- A.To allow for calibration error in the transmitter frequency display
- B.So that modulation sidebands do not extend beyond the band edge
- C.To allow for transmitter frequency drift
- D.All these choices are correct (correct answer)
WhyYou shouldn't set your transmit frequency exactly at a band edge because of transmitter calibration error, frequency drift, and sidebands that could extend beyond the edge, all of which risk transmitting outside the band. Staying off the exact band edge protects against three separate real risks: your transmitter's displayed frequency might be slightly off from true, the signal can drift after you set it, and voice or data sidebands extend some kilohertz to either side of your center frequency, any of which could push part of your signal outside the band and into an adjacent allocation, which is why §97.101(a) and §97.301(a-e) support all three reasons at once, making D correct.
