Technician exam question T1B02
Subelement T1, COMMISSION’S RULES· Group T1B · 47 CFR §97.301, 97.207(c)
Which of the following U.S. amateur radio operators are allowed to contact the International Space Station (ISS) on VHF bands?
- A.Only amateurs with a General class or higher license
- B.Any amateur with a Technician class or higher license (correct answer)
- C.Only amateurs with a General class or higher license, and NASA approval
- D.Any amateurs with a Technician class or higher license, and NASA approval
WhyAny amateur with a Technician class license or higher may contact the International Space Station on VHF bands. §97.301 and §97.207(c) give Technician licensees full privileges on the VHF bands used for satellite and space station work, and the ISS's amateur radio system operates on ordinary 2-meter and 70-centimeter frequencies open to any amateur, so B is correct. There's no extra NASA sign-off required to make a casual contact, which rules out C and D, and A wrongly raises the bar to General class when Technician privileges are already sufficient.
