General exam question G9D10
Subelement G9, ANTENNAS AND FEED LINES· Group G9D
In which direction or directions does an electrically small loop (less than 1/10 wavelength in circumference) have nulls in its radiation pattern?
- A.In the plane of the loop
- B.Broadside to the loop (correct answer)
- C.Broadside and in the plane of the loop
- D.Electrically small loops are omnidirectional
WhyAn electrically small loop antenna has nulls in its radiation pattern broadside to the loop. An electrically small loop antenna has a figure-eight pattern with its nulls pointing broadside to the loop, perpendicular to the loop's plane, while it radiates best in the plane of the loop itself, answer B. The nulls aren't in the plane of the loop (that's where it radiates best), it isn't null in both directions at once, and it definitely isn't omnidirectional, that's the opposite of what makes a small loop useful for direction finding, so A, C, and D are wrong.
