General exam question G5A08
Subelement G5, ELECTRICAL PRINCIPLES· Group G5A
What is impedance?
- A.The ratio of current to voltage
- B.The product of current and voltage
- C.The ratio of voltage to current (correct answer)
- D.The product of current and reactance
WhyImpedance is the ratio of voltage to current. Impedance is defined the same way Ohm's Law defines DC resistance, as the ratio of voltage across a component or circuit to the current flowing through it, but generalized to include the phase relationship AC introduces, answer C. It isn't the inverse ratio of current to voltage (that inverse relationship describes admittance), and it isn't simply a product of current and voltage or of current and reactance, so A, B, and D misstate the relationship.
