How close to the lower edge of a band’s phone segment should your displayed carrier frequency be when using 3 kHz wide LSB?
- A.At least 3 kHz above the edge of the segment (correct answer)
- B.At least 3 kHz below the edge of the segment
- C.At least 1 kHz below the edge of the segment
- D.At least 1 kHz above the edge of the segment
WhyWhen using 3 kHz wide LSB, the displayed carrier frequency should be at least 3 kHz above the lower edge of the band's phone segment. Because LSB energy extends downward from the displayed carrier frequency, staying inside a band's phone segment on LSB means keeping the displayed carrier at least the full 3 kHz bandwidth above the segment's lower edge, so the whole signal, which extends below the carrier, stays inside the segment, answer A. Placing the carrier below the edge, or only 1 kHz above it, would let part or all of a 3 kHz-wide signal fall outside the authorized segment, so B, C, and D don't provide adequate clearance.
