Subelement E8, SIGNALS AND EMISSIONS· Group E8A
How many different input levels can be encoded by an analog-to-digital converter with 8-bit resolution?
- A.8
- B.8 multiplied by the gain of the input amplifier
- C.256 divided by the gain of the input amplifier
- D.256 (correct answer)
WhyAn analog-to-digital converter with 8-bit resolution can encode 256 different input levels. An 8-bit analog-to-digital converter can encode 2 to the 8th power, or 256, distinct input levels, the direct consequence of how many unique binary codes 8 bits can represent, answer D. It isn't simply 8 levels, and involving the input amplifier's gain in this calculation doesn't change the converter's fundamental resolution, which is fixed by its bit depth alone.
