Technician exam question T4B01

What is the effect of excessive microphone gain on SSB transmissions?
- A.Frequency instability
- B.Distorted transmitted audio (correct answer)
- C.Increased SWR
- D.Sideband inversion
WhyExcessive microphone gain on SSB transmissions distorts the transmitted audio. Overdriving a microphone's gain pushes the transmitter's audio stage past its linear range, clipping and flattening the waveform, which the receiving station hears as distorted, splattering audio, answer B. Excess mic gain doesn't affect the carrier's frequency stability (A), the antenna system's SWR (C), or which sideband gets transmitted (D), those are unrelated to audio drive level.
