CTCSS (PL tone)

A sub-audible tone transmitted alongside your voice, required by many repeaters before they'll repeat your signal. It's not privacy or encryption, anyone with a scanner can still hear you, it's just a filtering mechanism the repeater uses to decide what to respond to.
