What is the total bandwidth of an FM phone transmission having 5 kHz deviation and 3 kHz modulating frequency?
- A.3 kHz
- B.5 kHz
- C.8 kHz
- D.16 kHz (correct answer)
WhyAn FM phone transmission with 5 kHz deviation and a 3 kHz modulating frequency has a total bandwidth of 16 kHz. Carson's rule estimates total FM bandwidth as twice the sum of peak deviation and the highest modulating frequency, so 2 times (5 kHz plus 3 kHz) comes out to 16 kHz, answer D. The other values don't account for both the deviation and modulating frequency the way Carson's rule requires.
