General exam question G4E01

What is the purpose of a capacitance hat on a mobile antenna?
- A.To increase the power handling capacity of a whip antenna
- B.To reduce radiation resistance
- C.To electrically lengthen a physically short antenna (correct answer)
- D.To lower the radiation angle
WhyA capacitance hat on a mobile antenna electrically lengthens a physically short antenna. A capacitance hat, a disc or set of spokes mounted near the top of a mobile whip, adds capacitance that offsets the whip's electrically short physical length, making it behave electrically like a longer, more efficient antenna, answer C. It doesn't raise power handling, doesn't reduce radiation resistance (a short antenna's low radiation resistance is the underlying problem the hat helps compensate for), and it isn't primarily about the radiation angle.
