How frequently must an analog signal be sampled to be accurately reproduced?
- A.At least half the rate of the highest frequency component of the signal
- B.At least twice the rate of the highest frequency component of the signal (correct answer)
- C.At the same rate as the highest frequency component of the signal
- D.At four times the rate of the highest frequency component of the signal
WhyAn analog signal must be sampled at least twice the rate of its highest frequency component to be accurately reproduced. To be accurately reproduced, an analog signal must be sampled at a rate at least twice the frequency of its highest frequency component, the Nyquist sampling theorem's fundamental requirement, sampling any slower risks aliasing and permanently losing information about the original signal, answer B. Sampling at half, at the same rate as, or even at four times that highest frequency describes either an inadequate rate (undersampling) or simply overstates the actual minimum requirement.
