E6A01

In what application is gallium arsenide used as a semiconductor material?

  • A.In high-current rectifier circuits
  • B.In high-power audio circuits
  • C.In microwave circuits (correct answer)
  • D.In very low-frequency RF circuits

WhyGallium arsenide is used as a semiconductor material in microwave circuits. Gallium arsenide's high electron mobility lets devices built from it operate well up into microwave frequencies, well beyond where ordinary silicon devices start running out of gain, answer C. It isn't chosen for high-current rectifiers, high-power audio, or very low-frequency RF work, applications where its cost and fragility offer no real advantage over silicon.
